I love this anime... (and how much do I love you LJ for creating a category for it!) I would suggest to people who are thinking about following the series to stick with it through the first 3 episodes. Those cover (imho) the weakest file, but after that point the anime really takes off!

I agree there wasn't a real super musical score, but I did enjoy the ED and the special ED for the Christmas Arc.

Quote: However, there are some episodes that can pretty much be put off as a stand-alone itself which makes it pretty meaningless.

I wouldn't exactly call them meaningless. They serve as character development episodes and usually add a little bit of comedy. (Though I do agree that there are one or two "wtf" episodes a la Cowboy Bebop.) Overall, I would agree with the scores that you gave.

I watched the first episode awhile back, but shelved it because it didn't seem that interesting at the time. I just recently re-discovered it because all of the shows I was following were ending and I'm so glad that I did! While I do agree that the character deisgn for the secondary characters is somewhat limited, the way the story unfolds is just something that you don't get in most other animes nowadays! Definitely an anime worth checking out!

Nice review! I'd have to agree with both you and cyd about the beginning being a little slow. But other than that it's definitely worth it to watch all the way through episode 40. (Even the little arc afterwards is kind of interesting...) Rakushun, Enki, and Shoryu are definitely my favorite group of characters! (Rakushun's VA also has the added bonus of being one of the VA's for Ouran Host Club... ;)) The music was superb, so much so that I actually shelled out the cash to buy the OST! (which is a big feat in itself... X-P) I would definitely agree with the scores that you gave in your review! :)

Nice review and I agree with your scores for sound and art. The OST is beautiful... quite possibly better than Mai HiME. Regarding your score for story and plot I do think that another season would have given them more time to flesh out certain characters and lengthen at least the ending battle. Since from what I hear only whole scores can be chosen, so I think that your rating of 8 is fair. I would have given it a 7.5 if it were possible because the ending seemed very rushed. Overall, a nice review! ^^

Nice review, though I wouldn't necessarily say that if a person liked Mai HiME that they wouldn't like Mai Otome... I found that both were highly entertaining with good music/storyline.

f

definitely agree with most of what you said. it had a wonderful storyline and because of good character development, you actually cared when anything bad/good happened to them! great review P-U-K-E-san! :D

f

i've got the whole series (+ OVAs and movie) on dvd... and while agree with you on almost everything, i must say that if you include the last 20 or so episodes of the series i would have given it a 9 for storyline... (why couldn't they just include the Jinchuu Arc like the manga?)

f

lol, i've got the first episode of the series sitting here on my desk, but i haven't found the time to watch it yet! now, reading your review i think i may forego studying for some finals this weekend to watch it! ^_^'

f

yup, thru 2007! i agree with much of your review (especially the music! :D), tho i think a 10 for the story is a little high... maybe a 9? (and i think Mokona is a 'he'... ;)) overall, great review!

f

i have yet to see more of the series (only saw the first 2 episodes) but i wasn't too impressed with what i did see... so my opinion of the show matches yours as well kawaiiguy. hopefully (as in Mai HiME) the series picks up after these "intro" episodes.

f

that's pretty much how i found the anime... tho some of the episodes have that "wtf" factor in them... my friends and i started watching the first dvd at 3 AM... we thought it was hilarious! we now call it the "Crack Anime" because it's like a drug (so feel good) and if you were 'on something' it'd be the funniest thing in the world... ^_^'

nice review! :D

f

i agree with most of what you said, but i'm gonna hafta agree with Mabui about the music. i loved the music for Mai HiME... most of it was very well placed (except for the HiME fight song in the last episode... but won't get into that...) imho, yuki kajiura did an excellent job on the ost... it's actually one of my favorite OSTs from an anime, second only to rurouni kenshin. but other than that, good review! :D
